I had a very bad experience with Conduit Arts after being approached by them to host a night at their space. Everything was professional and respectful up until I had some questions and concerns about why some art, which was to be a key part of the show, wasn’t given approval by Conduit - this was a highly valid query process to go through, given that Conduit had in fact approached me to host this night, and had not provided any clear guidelines as to what would be acceptable to the venue.
I emailed through my questions and mentioned my disappointment - but also suggested other options to see if there was some compromise that could be reached. In Conduit's response to my questions I was met with hostile insults and an immediate withdrawal of the offer to host the show.
Mr Kavanagh ended his email with this:
“I feel your response is entitled, presumptuous and naive and with this in mind feel that we will not be able to work together towards an event that pleases both parties. We are therefore retracting our offer to host the event.”
This left me with a full show, and only 20 days to find a venue.
I found Conduit to be very unprofessional, slow to respond (up to 5 day wait times between emails), immature and extraordinarily insulting to someone who works in the arts and has hosted many successful shows in conjunction with other venues in the past, is a business owner and runs a highly successful magazine.
I also found Mr Kavanagh's response to my questions puzzling (in addition to being unnecessarily rude) given that Conduit was the party that initially approached me knowing what our aesthetic was, and that he did not provide any guidance at the outset as to what Conduit's aesthetic criteria for acceptance was.
