There are many shoals and hidden rocks in the Thousand Islands that can wreck a boat if you are not very careful.

An interesting iron sculpture and the fountain.
The view from a look out, half way around the trail. Beautiful in the fall.
Thousand Island Casino. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission claims that the gamblers have lost about $800,000,000 gambling at this casino since it open up. Their losses average about $200 a visit. They share some of their profits with the local municipality and some charities.
The northerly of 4 bridges crossing the Gananoque River for the Thousand Island Railway. They originally had only 5 km. of tracks, going from down town, to the Grand Trunk train station. The track was later extended to 8 km. This bridge was built in 1883, closed in 1995. It is now used for the Gananoque hiking trail.
Not pretty, but beautiful anyway. The Gananoque Generating Station built in 1939 has a 0.7 mw electrical output and is only seasonal. That is pure green energy, enough for about 500 electric kettles. Owned by Fortis Ontario Co. For comparison, Kingston Mills has an output of 1.9 mw., Jones Falls has 2.4 mw. of seasonal power.

It looks as though the beavers may be starting a new dam here.
Far a Mill Illes
Porcupines are chewing on everything here. They strip the young bark off this small pine tree. They were very abundant 30 years ago, fishers cleaned them out, now there is a comeback.
A Scotch pine on a ridge top. It has been chewed up by porcupines. That would be a sticky aromatic mess to eat. Maybe it is like spicy foods for us. That is the 401 highway in the background.
Porcupines keep chewing any new growth on this tree killing the branches, but not the whole tree. There were many examples of this in the Gananoque Provincial Wildlife Preserve. It is their home turf, so accept it. Viewed in early April.
What is the difference between a marsh and a swamp? A swamp contains trees that have been swamped. A marsh is usually just cat tails. They often overlap.
A big beaver dam. Looking due east about 100 m. It can be seen in the satellite photo. It is about 80 m. or 250 feet across, about 1 m. high and 2 to 3 m. wide at the base. Built one stick and hand full of mud at a time. It does not leak. This pond does not show up on the topo maps based on 1976 aerial photos. It is relatively new.
