10 years ago I purchased a term life policy. Even then warning bells should have gone off when the sales rep insisted I should buy more than $100,000 in coverage because I was a first year University student who wanted to end up with a PhD. Fortunately my budget only allowed for $20/month and I couldn't get talked into extra premiums. Needless to say an insurance agent should be happy enough that a university student is applying for a minimal term life policy and doesn't need to up-sell someone on a tight budget.
Fast forward 10 years when my policy expired and I am now living hours away from their office. I received a phone call asking if I'd like to renew my policy for twice the cost. I said no thank you. They asked if the manager could contact me and I said sure. That phone call never happened. They insist he called. Regardless, at no time did I ever give authorization to renew the policy. Months pass and I notice they went ahead and renewed my policy! So I called to sort things out and got a promise for someone to call me back. That phone call also did not happen. So I wrote them a letter demanding my premiums be refunded. They called my home while I was at work and left me a message about filling out a form. They did not send me the form. They took another $32 out of my account the following month. I called again and left a message with the receptionist. This time they returned my call and gave me instructions to go to a local co-operators to sign a cancellation form that they would fax over.
I went to the local office a week later and they had no idea what I was talking about. The local office took the initiative to find my policy but when they did they noticed it had been cancelled already. Taking no chances at this point I insisted I sign the form and asked them to process it.
I just received a cheque in the mail for my last $32. However, they still have 8 months of premiums I consider stolen.
