Didn't have the car type I requested, charged extra for the insurance I already purchased in advance, and have me the tiny car with empty gas tank (gas light on, below "e"). Normally, no problem. But I had never been to Costa Rica before, was driving by myself, so had zero idea where to go get gas. Terrible experience. The people were friendly though, so there's that.

This family owned, Costa Rican rental agency cheats, lies, distorts prices and attempts to rip off consumers. Upon comparing my experience with other tourists who were returning cars, I learned that my experience constitutes standard practice. The young staff employed behind the counter are pressured and trained to rob tourists.
Solid car rental tried to extract $1000 dollars for a $350 rental (It was originally reserved at an advertised price of $50).
I returned my car at 5:30 am, just before an International return flight. This marked me as a prime candidate for a scam. I presented my written contract with a promise of the net total price. But, the agent launched into a rehersed act about not finding it in the computer. He refused to call the owner who had issued me a very clear promise on the phone, in the email, and the printed contract document.
I pulled my bags and those of my entire group off of the airport shuttle bus and told him that I was contacting a local lawyer. He tried to frighten me with the fact that I had already signed a boilerplate power-of-attorney to their own choice of a local lawyer. When I explained to him that my company retains the services of a law firm in Costa Rica, he jumped in the airport van and left without me. When he returned (and after consulting with his owner) he ruefully admitted that he had overlooked my contract and the owners commitment. He adjusted the price and drove our group airport. This was confirmed to me by the other passengers in the airport van.
Don't buy that guff about a government requirement to purchase insurance from a monopoly consortium. While true, other agencies advertise honest prices and quote total cost. I plan to write a full review in my blog and a few print publications.
This car rental agency has scam written all over it!

Never rent here I promise this place will rip you off!!!! Charged me for 1 day extra and flat out said he does not care. Good thing I charged this to my Amex!
Also I purchased the insurance online as well and they did not honor it.
Never never rent here. I have rented from Budget and Hertz in CR with no problem. You have been warned!

If you are visiting Costa Rica and need to rent a car, please do yourself a favor and stay away from Solid card rental. You will potentially save yourself stress and anxiety when that should be exactly what you are avoiding. This was my 5th trip to Costa Rica and this was by far my worst experience ever with a car rental agency. Outside of everything I list below, the agent who assisted us had the most demeaning, condescending attitude.
I'll start with the only positive experience I had with Solid: the person who picked us up from the airport was great. He was on time, very nice and helpful. However, once we arrived to the agency it quickly went downhill.
First, the car we rented was unavailable for mechanical issues on the car. No worries, this can happen. Typically an agency would help you out in this situation ... not at Solid. They first presented us with two options: (1) take a 2 wheel drive manual sedan at the same price as the car we rented - we rented a 4 wheel drive automatic SUV which cost more and we needed 4 wheel drive for the places we were visiting - or (2) drive ourselves 5 hours to another agency of theirs, for which they would not pay for the gas or compensate us in any way. They assured us we did not need an SUV or 4 wheel drive, which we learned along our drive that they were very wrong.
Next, came the insurance. I had already communicated via email with someone within the agency who confirmed my credit card covered CDW. I even had a letter from my credit card company to confirm this as well as a print out of the email communication with the employee within Solid, but this wasn't good enough for the agent. We had to go through the hassle of getting the credit card company on the phone to confirm the insurance. Once doing so, I confirmed that I didn't want the CDW, but he went ahead and charged us for CDW anyways. After reviewing my receipts, I questioned the insurance they charged us for and he confirmed that they charged us for CDW because I "asked for it" and described any mis-communication regarding this as "your fault" over and over again. After agreeing to refund me for the CDW insurance, he indicated the deposit would be larger - $3000 as compared to $1200 - so they would have to charge me the difference. This was not an issue for me. However, instead of charging me $1800, they charged an additional $2000. I questioned him about the total deposit, but he continued to state "it's only $3000." I literally had to have him take out a calculator and add the two amounts on the receipts together ($1200 and $2000), after which he just stared at me and said "the deposit is only $3000."
Next came the final payment, for which they were trying to overcharge me. My reservation included GPS. However, they never provided me one because the agent said I never reserved one. Luckily I had a printout of the reservation, which clearly included a charge for GPS. After pointing this out, he said "oh well we don't have any for you, very busy right now." I then asked why I was paying the same total amount as my reservation since I was not getting a GPS, and he said because the reservation did not include the SLS insurance. I then had to point out the charge for SLS insurance on the reservation, after which he just said "oh well you can figure that out when you return the car."
After this, we walked down to a neighboring car rental agency to inquire about their availability. When in line, the person in front of me overheard me say something about Solid and she turned around and said "Join the club." According to her, she had a reservation, but they gave her car away to someone else and told her "there's other car rental agencies out there, good luck." Even the agent who assisted me at this new car rental agency indicated that there's been a lot of issues with SOLID recently. Luckily they were able to assist us and provide the car we needed and were much, much better to work with.
Sorry for the long winded review, but this was a horrible experience and I strongly urge you to stay away from Solid car rental.

Several complaints about this company. If you order a car online, it will not be the same price once you get here, guaranteed. Mine was nearly triple the price seen online. There was another guy there while I was there that had the same problem. They will not honor other insurance plans, you have to buy the local one (although this may be standard in Costa Rica). The person that was helping me treated me well, but the person that was helping the other guy was somewhat disrespectful. They don't seem to have much selection either. Also you have to put a deposit on your credit card. You will get your money back (as long as you don't break anything) but, without a credit card you can't get a car. It can't be a debit card. I'd probably give 1 star, but they offered a shuttle to and from the airport for free which was very convenient.
