I guess this is a good hostel if you're spending one night in San Jose and don't intend on getting any sleep that whole time, but otherwise don't bother.
This place is ridiculously over-hyped and if you check out reviews you realise that.
The walls are paper thin, the bar plays music till midnight which is fair enough, but then around midnight started blasting metal music so loud I couldn't sleep. Then from about 1am to 7am a very loud group of middle-aged women kept us awake all night by laughing and screaming and no one seemed to care despite how loud they were being.
The surrounding area is not good either and we were advised not to walk anywhere.
The place is relatively clean and the bar area looks like it could be nice if there was actually anybody here. Apparently our dorm and the crazy loud people are the only ones here.
Before we came we were advised to spend as little time in san jose as possible and I would pass that on, adding to definitely not stay at hostel pangea either. It's not the fun atmosphere they make it out to be, it's just very noisy.

Rating it one star because of the attitude of the bartender/cook/whatever he was. Asked for a glass with ice and he said it's the rules not to give it out. After arguing for a while, he said he would give me ice but I had to find my own glass, I couldn't borrow one of the 20+ glasses behind the bar. Also, the kitchen is useless. Cooked dinner with barely any utensils and found mold on one of the plates.
Only two power points in a room with 7 young people. Also, unbelievably only 6 lockers when there's 7 beds.
Overall not a friendly vibe. And I completely agree with the other comments. They don't tell you about the free meals until you ask, and breakfast is only from 7:30-8:30.

Has the potential to be THE COOLEST hostel. Onsite pool and bar. Cool deco and nice everything. Have stayed many times and would stay again.

Some of the staff are friendly but most were not and not very unhelpful. Pool table was broken. The hostel was very empty and when asked if there were many other tourists here we were told there are alot which wasn't true. Also the rooms had no windows so they would get quite warm. The rooftop was a nice area and if there were more people could be a nice hangout area.

This is an extremely unique hostel! The interior of the hostel is completely painted with really cool art, and has cool arches in the hallways. Feels very safe and secure. Very close to the major bus station. The front desk workers speak great English
