At the pickup window was given a hard sell on dust storm insurance despite repeatedly telling them that I would be using my credit card insurance. Eventually got the car and had no problems until drop off, where it was claimed I had done off-road driving (driving on F-marked highways are illegal in non-suv cars) and would be liable for a 100000 ISK fine as a result. The agent told me that if I agreed to the fine they would provide me with documentation that I could then use on an insurance claim. Though I hadn’t researched the driving laws in iceland I was fairly certain that none of the golden circle highways had been marked F. After probing and asking for more information about the fine it was clear that the rental agent was being forced by a manager to try to enforce this fine based on flimsy or incomplete information. (The F road they claimed I had driven on was 100 km east of the furthest point I had driven). After I showed them this on the map, I managed to have the fine removed from my rental contract, but this was a very stressful end to an otherwise enjoyable trip.

Very poor customer service, unfriendly and slow. The worst thing is that when they take care of you, they want to sell you everything. Read well what is signed. If you buy some extra product, they make you sign in haste with the excuse that there are many people waiting and have already gotten it to you, because the dependents charge for commission. It has happened to us and now it is impossible to claim why it is what we signed, we have tried anyway. I do not recommend Avis or Payless in Iceland, the cheap ends up going very expensive. Very little respect.

Prepare to be browbeaten if you do not opt for the numerous insurance products or purchase the full tank of gas option...the whole cross sell process equated to an hour wait and our only negative experience in Iceland. Ironically, I avoided other low cost options hoping to avoid this hassle akin to the extended warranty sell at the car dealership. being told "that I will be held personally responsible for all damages" if I do not purchase the coverage is a fear tactic that works with others I guess. Would never opt for Avis in Iceland again. Ps the car battery died at our first stop!

Got an excellent almost brand new car; VW polo. The car drove really well, good acceleration, braking, and responsiveness on turning.
The services at the counter for both pick up and return were friendly, speedy, and professional.
After this experience, I won't be renting from any other company in iceland.

No shuttle back to the airport when you return the car. You have to walk around 400 meters to get back to the airport on foot. Luggage is not the only problem, also cold, rain and heavy wind. They should offer a free transportation to the airport.
