This is by far the worst room we had during our vacation in Italy. We have saved Monterosso until the end of our trip. We booked a standard room based on the photos we have seen. We paid 160 euros per night thinking that the standard room would not be too standard based on the price however it was below standard. We had no balcony no view, very small bathroom with the toilet almost stuck to the wall. Everytime you move in the shower you would hit the tap (because it is that small) and you would either switch the water off or changes temperature. The room itself had absolutely no character stuck in the 70s style. The moment we walked in we were completely shocked and asked to be moved to a sea view room. Without any sense of apathy we were told "we are booked out".
Now moving to the hotel. This place is set on a just below the tip of a mountain, the view is nice however it is very hard to walk to town as it is very steep and exhausting. There are buses that operate hourly however you are left at the mercy of the bus drivers and you better hope they are not rude or didn't have a fight with thier spouses as that would reflect on their driving.
The staff were completely out of warmth. A complete lack of customer sympathy considering that getting to montersosso by car and to that hotel is like 'challenge completed'. There are many negative things to write, however the moral of the story is what we say in Australia 'complete rip off'.

Wow! I have NEVER had a more INhospitable stay anywhere, ever in my life! My family and another couple brought some bread and cheese back to the hotel and borrowed 5 plates from the breakfast room. The woman at the desk found us and was furious - we should have asked her!! We apologized profusely - we told her we had no idea that we should have asked her (no signs against it) and we were very sorry.
A few minutes later while we were in the lobby, she came back and was still furious and told us in ALL her years, NOTHING like this had EVER happened and she could not believe how rude we were to have used the plates without asking. I was mortified and apologized once again. My friend finally interrupted Barbara and said "You have made yourself clear, you have berated us, we have apologized, there is nothing else we can do - we would NEVER treat a guest in our house like this". And amazingly enough, a few minutes later, Barbara repeated her fury once again.
I could not wait to leave that hotel and would NEVER stay there again. There were a number of other hotel guests that witnessed this and chatted with us about it. They too, were shocked.
