When people learn that a work in question is a dissertation, they are usually hesitant to go any farther – and, usually, justifiably so. I would urge the reader to depart from that normal path in this instance. If one’s point of departure is off, chances are one’s destination will be very hard to reach, if at all. Here we begin with a wholesome theological anthropology, thus ensuring arrival at a safe haven. The author, intriguingly, places Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II into conversation with each other, rounding out the conversation by introducing Cardinal John Henry Newman as the final interlocutor – a trio of brilliant minds, all of whom just happen to have been canonized in recent memory. Dr. Cannon takes seriously the possible objection that John Paul’s “theology of the body” deviates in some way from Paul VI’s Humanae Vitae but concludes that John Paul “develops” Paul and does so quite convincingly. Every confessor and seminarian, anyone involved in marriage preparation, and any moral theology professor ought to ensure that this volume finds a place of honor in one’s theological library.
