One of the highlights of our trip to Kyoto. I was so thrilled when I found out we could see the snow monkeys without going far into the wilderness. Just a short bus ride from Kyoto and a 20 minute hike.

Go early to avoid crowds. Monkey feeding times vary throughout the day. I think 10:30am is the first feeding of the day.

Great view of Kyoto from the top of the mountain. There is a little hut at the top where you can buy bananas, apples and peanuts for 50 Yen a bag. I think they liked the peanuts best. There are also bathrooms and drinks for sale here.

There is a hierarchy with the monkeys the bigger ones will try and hog all the food. So I try and wait until the bully is fed or not looking and feed the others.

The monkeys roam free but you should follow the rules of

1. Not looking them in the eye
2. Do not crouch down on the ground
3. Do not eat in front of them
4. Stay 2 meters away from them.

Some young child held out her hand to the monkey and it started to scream and get aggressive. But a worker there was on the ball and chased it away.

If you follow the rules you will have a safe and fun time. Watching animals that are roaming free and not in cages is a special feeling.

This was a fun hike up the side of a mountain which ended in a monkey house. The monkeys were well behaved and the attendants there made sure to keep everyone safe. I enjoyed feeding the monkeys.

The monkeys are extremely cute and interesting to observe. They can be very scary up close, so always maintain a distance if you're not confident in what you're doing. The park also has a feeding house where you can buy a pack of food (peanuts or apples) for 100 yen per pack and feed them to the monkeys. The hike up to the park is around 20 mins and you can see the entire city while up there. Extremely fun place to visit when in Arashiyama.

Long 20-minute hike up the mountain (long because of the steep grade) but the view is amazing. Has to rush up to the top because feeding tie was in 10 minutes. Feeding the monkeys was awesome. Basically a quarter US for a small bag of food. You can only feed them from inside a shack. The monkeys will stick their hands into the caged walls to grab the snacks right from your hands.

Amazing! I enjoyed the hike and more importantly the monkeys! The staff is very knowledgeable and respectful of the monkeys, make sure you are too! All the monkeys have personalities and names, believe it or not, there are over a 100 monkeys and some of the staff can identify them all! Ask questions, learn about them and enjoy the look out after your hike up the mountain! The very top has a place with drinks for sale, otherwise bring some water for your journey up!
