Great selection of japanese food as well it served alcohol (beer).

Deteriorated significantly from the past. The food is not as fresh as before for the past 2 times I went there. No innovation to improve food quality and selection.

As another reviewer has mentioned, the quality has declined. I think most likely due to a change in chefs; which is what happened to the other Umai-ya in Damansara Perdana. They're still accommodating with requests for items not on their menu though which is a plus.

What I want and what is the most important in a Japanese restaurant that serves buffet? Everyone's got their opinions but the basics in general for most people are as below:
1) Good Sushi / Sashimi
2) Variety of choices
3) Little things that separates the good and the bad

And that's about covers it all, if your restaurant cannot cover these 2, you do NOT deserve to survive because there are so many alternatives out there which are so much better with the same price range. And this brings us right back to this particular establishment, Umai-ya in Damansara Utama.

First of all, the raw fishes (sushi / sashimi). Because we were one of the first customers of the day (at 11.30am) the fish were just taken out of the fridge not long ago, I think this is why they tasted bland and dry on our first round. On the second round (after 30-40 minutes later) they are very good, so we ordered third round but this time some of the fish tasted slightly sour (especially the butter-fish) but not as bad as the first round. Overall, the most important food range is at best - inconsistent.

Then it comes to variety. This place has so little choices on the menu if you have 4 person in your group you can try them all within 2 hours. Some of the most popular Japanese dishes that you would expect can be had in this kind of establishment is NOT there (e.g. grilled fish head).

In the restaurant's defense, it is an À la carte style buffet where you order through the waiter / waitress via a sheet of paper (which is highly wasteful) and then they bring you your food afterwards (not the usual "pick your food yourself" style buffet) so it's more delicate in nature. The food is of small portion (which is fine by me due to food cost) but you would expect them to be of better quality that is better / more professionally prepared but most of them were not. Take the soba noodles (that can be finished with 2 mouth fulls) for example, it's too salty. The only things that were decent enough to consume are the clam soup, the hand rolls and the ginger fried rice.

Then there are the little things that spoiled our experience. The coke that we ordered (twice, just to test whether it's a one time thing or it's consistently like that) was FLAT. It's basically sugar water with some ice with no CO2 in a small glass. We found out later that they were using cans for the drinks, after they opened the cans and poured some into the glass, they will re-use it for another order if they can't finish the entire can. This means if no one orders coke for another 5-10 minutes the CO2 in the can is already gone, that's why we have flat cokes. And also the service is very very poor. I know it's hard to hire staffs these days and the restaurant is definitely under-staffed but if you do not have the manpower to do this kind of buffet style, just DON'T DO IT because when your customers want a refill of their tea, they have to do it themselves, might as well convert the buffet style to the regular "pick your food yourselves".

Seriously for this price range, you have so many other better options in the Klang Valley which I will not mention here. I still can't figure out why anyone would come here
