Tijuana has a lot of so-called veterinarians trained locally or in Mexico City, Dr. Najera comes off as one of the most professional, prestigious ones located in a good area of the city with a properly equipped facility and somewhat reasonable prices, even with enough empathy for clients to sometimes negotiate prices, allow you to pay later or in installments, which I feel thankful for as I struggled economically over the years. As the owner of many pets, this combination made me trust his advice maybe blindly, also aware there weren't many other good options left so in a way, I settled. In the Fall of 2012, I brought my rescued dog Joe, who had successfully recovered after being found on the streets. Joe seemed to be intoxicated but nothing major and was advised to stay overnight for evaluation. Of course, this evaluation is symbolic as (I would learn later) Joe actually stayed alone in his center, no night shifts w/ the staff. When I went to pick him up the next morning, I was asked to wait for Dr. Najera, who arrived later and seemed as confused as I was but told me anyway that I could say goodbye to Joe's BODY, who was found dead when they opened in the morning. To say this was a horrific experience is an understatement, for many years I dealt with so much confusion as to what really happened to my dog, regret over what I could have done, grief, and the way it was handled and not properly explained was traumatic.
Despite this event and considering the good experiences with Dr. Najera treating mild conditions of other pets, I mistakenly thought that Joe's incident had been simply an accident. Fast forward to 2017, my mother takes my beloved cat Boris, who has been more than a pet for my family and I think any true cat lover would understand when I say Boris IS family. After a quick checkup and my mother mentioning that her financial resources were scarce, one of Najera's employees simply deemed my cat's condition as an infection and sent my mother back with a gel for Boris to take during a week. By day 5, Boris was in awful conditions, could barely breath, couldn't eat, pee, or even clean himself, so we searched and searched during the night, called Najera's "emergency line" (which much like his overnight service- is bogus) and ultimately ended up at Vet Playas with Dr. Fimbres, who immediately could tell something was very wrong with my cat and performed every necessary test and in less than 2 hours, could certainly tell this was a case of feline infectious peritonitis, which means Boris can die at any moment as he's in an advanced/clinical stage of this awful disease. The news have been devastating and when Najera finally texted saying "sorry I was out of town and didn't have my emergency phone", my mother respectfully (I can confirm!) brought up the poor performance by a member of her staff (she was even nice enough to mention how great HE is). This didn't go down well and despite knowing my cat has a fatal disease, he then proceeded to send a sarcastic "hope he gets well soon!" and hours later texted again (hello psycho?) reminding her that she was advised on x-rays and these weren't performed thanks to her. This is absolutely not true but it also magnifies his lack of sensibility and how poorly conditioned he is to deal with critical situations with pets and their owners. How can you send sarcasm and guilt-tripping to people grieving? smfh. I immediately called him regarding the texts he was sending, you simply do not send that to ANYONE.. he first wouldn't take my call claiming he was busy but when he finally did, a beast was unleashed, he said he was no magician and that my cat's situation was my mother's fault because she had her financial hardship. He evaded any type of responsibility and immediately accused the owners just like he did with the dog he left misdiagnosed and dying alone years ago. This guy is brutal.. he gives a good impression and may heal your pet's flu but his non-existent work ethic lives up to every horror story of medical treatment in the third world.
