I used to love eating at this place. I've lived in Middelburg for 3 years now and De Mug was always a nice pub to go to with friends or out to a nice dinner with good food. It's dim lighting and local atmosphere made it a nice, calm place to socialize with friends or have a romantic candlelit date. The food was also top-notch and the prices were affordable for dutch standards. The bar recently changed owners. The new owners changed the place and not for the better. The pictures on the walls changed from old photographs of the city into Zeuwse Meiden (it's not awful but large pictures of women are now staring at you while you're eating), too-bright white lights were installed over the tables, and the menu was changed--the chef is still the same apparently. The atmosphere of the place has completely changed (not for the better) and it's no longer gezellig. Food items on the menu used to be just over €20 each and meals would come with a nice side of french fries (friet) and a side salad. Now, meals are just under €20, the portions are much smaller (even for dutch standards) and you need to pay extra for a side of french fries and/or a side salad. The menu also no longer contains fun/exotic food choices (deer, rabbit, duck), which is also one of the reasons we liked eating here. The lam stew (the most exotic thing on the menu now) came in a very small pot and it was extremely salty. If you are the new owner and you're reading this, please switch the light bulbs to yellow light and add candle sticks back to the tables, replace a little of the atmosphere that made this local pub a nice place to go for a drink after work or with friends in the weekends--bringing back the atmosphere might even bring back the locals and return the charm. Tonight the restaurant was so loud (louder than it's ever been) that you can no longer talk to your dinner date without screaming...

Nice pub, like the old fashioned interior. Not all bar personell knows the beer choices too well, so you have to know what you want. Try a "mug bitter", the house beer. It is good.

If you want beer, this is a great cafe to visit in Middelburg. They have a very varied selection and the decoration inside if quite nice. Not modern or sleek, but cozy and comfortable. You can also have dinner here, and it's good, but fairly expensive. Staff is friendly.
