Worst car rental company ever. Basically thieves. Unethical, inconsiderate, money grabbing.
I will never rent a car from thrifty ever again, and will be sharing my disgust with their service for years to come.

Just appalling. Make sure you carefully photograph any car you hire here before and after your trip. Because they will 'conveniently forget' to inspect it when you return it, and then a day or two later, claim that it was damaged and slug you for it. Of course, if you go to look at the car, they will claim that the damage has been fixed in the interim. In over 30 years of hiring cars, I have never faced such shonky behaviour. Furthermore, they don't tell you they've done so. You just get an email that says thanks for hiring, receipt attached. If, because there was no damage, you don't think to check the receipt for extra charges, you wouldn't know until you get your bank statement. Finally, don't pay for a GPS unit, they're out of date and the batteries are dead. So if you go over a bump, the screen will cut out. Not the best when you're trying to navigate a strange city in busy traffic.

Used a Relocation rental to do a road trip from Wellington back home to Auckland. No issues or hassles with the hire were encountered. Friendly reception upon picking up the vehicle.

I had a really awkward experience with Thrifty. I will describe it and will leave to you guys make your own conclusion.
I pre-booked a car for a weekend-trip. I double checked in advance if I was legally allowed to drive in New Zealand with my brazilian driver's license. The answer is: Yes. I am legally allowed to drive in NZ up to one year. But I have a official translator of my brazilian drivers license just in case.
I went to Thrifty last saturday to pick up the car and the employee who checked my reservation was very rude from the very beginning. Firstly he asked for a translated version of my driver's license, which I forwarded to his email.
After looking to the translation he said:
- "This is not new zealand translation."
I said:
- "It's an official translation from my driver's license from portuguese to english." (It's the same official translation I sent for my visa, btw.)
He looked at the driver's license, looked to the translation and you could see that his facial expression had changed. So he called his work-mate to validate if the translation would be acceptable. For his surprise, his work-mate confirmed it was a valid english translation and there was no problem about it.
And then the most awkward situation happened. He said to his workmate:
- "So, finish this reservation yourself."
He stepped away from the desk, put his back against the wall and started mumbling with another employee, looking at me and my partner for a couple of times. After that he just walked away and didn't say a word to us. Everyone was quiet and uncomfortable with the situation.
His workmate, overtly upset with his attitude, then finished my reservation and gave me the key.
I didn't say anything at the moment because I didn't really want to ruin my holiday. If someone is able to act like that, imagine the kind of problems they can bring related to my reservation afterwards?
When I returned the car, there was another employee from Thrifty who gave me a nice treatment and apologise for any inconvenience.
Is Thrifty aware that they are employing prejudiced people?
I am not sure if I would recommend Thrifty again.
