A local favourite, easily accessible by public transport. If driving, get there before noon (earlier on weekends) or parking is packed. Nice cafe, nice walks to be had, just remember to bring water & sun protection, and there are no rubbish bins in the valley so take it all out with you.

This sanctuary is far better than the online promotions suggest. We did the night walk, so even though we couldn't see most plants or any scenery, contact with insects, birds and other occupants was quite a thrill. No kiwis to be seen unfortunately, but they were definitely heard.

Awesome bird sanctuary. can easily get a wheelchair around the main walking track, however there are a few hills. If you intend to take a wheelchair up to the dam be aware of loose gravel and steep hill parts. there are also tree roots which could pose an issue. I managed to get to the dam with some assistance in a manual chair.

Absolutely a must visit in Wellington. This sanctuary is completely fenced from predators which makes it a paradise for native birds and the Tuatara. Even more amazing is that the cost of the fence was funded by volunteers, truly inspirational.

Absolutely awesome place. Fantastic to be able to get so close to so many species that are under threat everywhere else. The birdsong day and night is amazing and the volunteers and staff are fantastic too!
