To avoid the long queue, get your ticket on the opposite side of the palace square in the "modern and comtemporary art" section. Buy a ticket for the 4 branches of the Hermitage museum and your good to go

Hard to find entrance. It's on the river side no signage. Uncomfortable seats but stunning building and Catherine the greats own private theatre back in the day

If you are a museum afficianado, this is the number one place to visit. Five palaces teeming with paintings, artifacts, murals etc. In addition, the palaces themselves are works of art. If you really want to see this place properly, keep aside 5 days. Even then, you will feel you didn't cover everything. THIS HAS TO BE ON EVERYONE'S BUCKET LIST..
