Surprising problems
I read the great reviews and selected Smart Car for our trip. I was surprised to be given an old model with 186,000 km on it. I was surprised to find that the centre arm rest was held together with plastic cord. Nevertheless it was a beautiful day and we enjoyed heading south to Boulder Bay. I was surprised that the plastic cord had a sharp point where it was attached that sliced my thumb and drew blood. I was surprised also that the car had difficulty advancing to faster gears. It was supposed to be an automatic but the engine raced in lower gears and did not change to a higher gear. I eventually learned to drive it like a semi automatic, moving the stick shift every time I wanted to change gear. It was a beautiful trip around Simons town and up over the top to come down on the Atlantic side. The next day we were supposed to drop the car off at the airport. There was no sheet of paper with a map or even a location for the drop off. No problem. I just called the office number on the business card given to me. No one there. Just a voice mail as we headed to airport. I called the cell phone number. No answer. As we approached the airport we had been calling for 45 minutes. The Thrifty people said that I could not leave the car with them. They said to leave it over on the edge of the parking area. We had a plane to catch. This was very stressful. Where to leave the keys. How about the final damage inspection. How was this to be paid? This was a nightmare. The Thrifty people said to leave the keys inside the car. Finally my phone rang. It was the Smart representative who was at some other parking lot. She made her way to Thrifty and we completed the steps to leave the car with her. It took me a while to calm down. It had been very upsetting.

The car was great, but the staff are even better. After upgrading our rental, Henriette helped me figure out some or other banking complication very efficiently. Great company highly recommend.

I've only ever experienced excellence with Smart Car hire. Courteous and efficient in every way necessary, I found the entire experience wonderful. It was all quick and easy, with very little fuss. I'd recommend smart car hire to anyone who wants to get around cape town quickly and affordably.

Cape Town is a wonderfull city. My girlfriend and I had a amazing holiday in SA. During our stay in Cape Town we rented a Smart. It is the ideal car to move around in the city and we used it as well for day trips to Stellenbosch, Simon's Bay and Cape point. The service of this company was outstanding and very friendly. I guess we made the best choice hiring a car regarding value for money.
Don't forget to swing by Dapper Coffee next to the office. We had a lunch and coffee over there. Very nice place to visit.

Great city sprinter! Low on petrol and great prices, plus these smart cars are the easiest to park anywhere.
