We took a boat and went there in one hour. We had the chance to be guided by an ex prisonner who explained us everything and specially the details about Mandela.
If you go there, there is 2 boats, one is taking 1 hour and the other 30 minutes.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to South Africa. The tours are led by previous prisoners. We were lucky to have Ntando Mbana lead us on our tour. He was a political prisoner who was on the prison at the same time as Nelson Mandela. He was very informative and taught us a lot about forgiveness and reconciliation. He has no bitterness towards this institution that had caused him so much pain. Be sure to take the time to visit the individual cells which have cards explaining who the previous occupier was.

Tip: Buy your tickets well in advance as space is limited and give yourself time to make it to the waterfront (especially considering Cape Town traffic).
