The current exhibit on the Cultural Revolution is a collection of repetitive symbols - buttons, red books, posters, and other marginal objects - which does little to illuminate one of the most complex phenomena of modern China. It is distortive: while the exhibition does have a section on the humiliation of the powerful, it fully misses that totalitarian scale of the revolt against authority that Mao unleashed. Each individual lived through the period in fear of beeing singled out for wanton violence at the hands of anyone, from neighbor to casual stranger.
