First time so close to the figure who has been controversial in contemporary Chinese history. His memorial hall is grand and the Freedom Square deserves its name to remind people what it may cost not having it. The great concert and opera halls stationed on either of the square are meticulously constructed and put to use for the people.

One of Taiwan's most famous landmarks, this large square surrounded by beautiful buildings is a pleasure to walk in during any time of the year (exception typhoons, perhaps!).

In winter 2017, the main hall housing the statue of Chiang Kai-shek is under renovation and so covered up.

Still, it's an impressive area and the hall inside is beautiful. The buildings in front of the memorial hall house the national theatre and concert hall. At certain times of the day you'll see young local people practising their dance moves. Really nice place to visit and walk around!

It’s nice to walk around the grounds both during the day and at night. The inside museum is nice too—make sure you can catch the changing of the guards as that’s always a nice thing to see while there. It’s worth a stop while in Taipei, though no need for more than an hour or two tops.

Prepare to walk!

This place is fantastic. It is widely spread out but is a nice stroll and very clean. The layout is very classic Chinese, wide open cement clad spaces.

Prepare to spend approximately 2 hours here, including watching the guards, looking through the museum, and watching the guard change over.

It is a must do in Taipei.

At the center of the grounds is an exceptional memorial with the Old President sitting in his chair, in a fashion similar to Lincoln's memorial. The National Performing Arts Theatre is located on the grounds of the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial and it is full of identity, one of great cultural sharing, from the finest international Classical arts to modern thoughtful stage plays. Just outside on the steps of the theatre, kids and school teams, the elderly doing a group walk, runners serious about wide-open space for running in the city, mix with acrobats warming up with a troupe of actors from the Peiping opera school, to the catch groove of Taipei's Hip Hop dancers of tomorrow , and all find a space to enjoy what they are passionate about. Occupied by smiling faces of every age and you get a buzz just walking through the groups like a stroll through time immemorial, one that is not full of ancient artifacts, but one whose breath awakens a new page spontaneously changing from the unplanned movie of fabulous actors and actresses every day. To some folks there is something in the air; the influences of Taiwan's liberating democracy, to others it's the benevolent side of leaders of a different generation.Check it out.
