We've been using them for years, we can pick up and return at the airport, so it saves transport to/from your hotel. TCI is a good spot for a rental car, you can explore the island, visit Da Conch Shack, some of the more remote beaches and snorkeling spots, drive out to the many good restaurants, run down to the local liquor store for rum punch ingredients, etc. if you're a diver, meet the group at the dock rather than getting picked up in a small van that stops at all the hotels picking everyone else, and be on your way as soon as you get back to the dock, no waiting around wasting time. We typically get a Jeep Wrangler for the week, not the cheapest option but fun to drive around. Keep in mind TCI drives on the left and has a lot of roundabouts on the major roads so you need to be a little adventurous. The cars are base model, no fancy options like Bluetooth, so bring a cord to connect iPod to auxiliary jack or burn a cd with your favorite island songs. You don't *need* a car here but we like the flexibility. Keep in mind that TCI is on "island time" so be patient as things take a little longer, but we've always found rent a buggy to be responsive. They will meet us at the airport and set you up, show you how to put the top down, if you don't see them then flag down one of the porters and ask them to call them for you. Cars are clean and never had a problem returning them with a little sand leftover. Ask them for a map in the car when you arrive, the road system is pretty easy to navigate, although signage is a little limited so you may have to use your judgement.
