The customer service was great and the guys looked after me when after a delayed flight. The car was in great condition and everything ran smoothly. To my surprise also there were no cross border fees like the other companies!!

I've used Hertz at city airport over 100 times. They are great. However stay away from Hertz at international airport. They rip you off and the Hertz complaints process is absolute rubbish.

I do not recommend this company! We were only renting a car for about 30 hours as we took the car to the Giants Causeway area and stayed over one night to return the next day. We noticed slight issues with the manual car from the start including intermittent "burning smelling". Limited on time, the car still drove OK so we continued North.10 hours later (about 3 hours of driving) in the evening, the car broke down (going up a hill! :S). The emergency roadside assistance number didn't work on my phone and when I could borrow a locals phone, they didn't even pick up on the first ring. Finally reaching them, they told us that they wouldn't be able to send a replacement car as they would need to assess the issue with the car. We would need to "Find our own way back to Belfast" the next day and also to the site where we were to return the car. With no supports provided, we had to catch a bus back (which completely eliminated the need for renting the car as we planned on driving down the coastal route on our way back to Belfast the next day). Taking a taxi from the bus station to the Hertz station, the staff person had no idea where our car was or what we were to do. He eventually found our car and notified us that the issue was a blown clutch and we would be charged 150pounds for the towing, but not the clutch replacement... strange. We would also not be reimbursed for our bus and taxi transport.
After emailing the company, their customer service has been pitiful, and I wanted to be sure to share my experiences with others so that they do not choose Hertz for their car rental!

£1200 held on your card unless you pay for their extortionate insurance (which for 4 days was almost 1/4 of the price of my own personal annual insurance). I informed them that the cars tyre pressure light was on when I got in it, they just turned the light off. The light came back on again, so I checked the pressure and it was almost half the psi it should have been - this should have been checked before we got the car, huge safety issue. The car was only a year old and felt like it was falling apart!
There was also £200 held on my card for fuel in case we didn't return it with a full tank, it only cost around £40-45 to fill the entire tank, so another huge inflation. This hold still hasn't been taken off my card, 3 days after the car had been returned!
On the plus side, the staff at the airport desk were really polite, friendly and helpful, they did all they could to accommodate us and make things as easy as possible.

I am very surprised at some of the other reviews here. I have been regularly using Hertz at City airport for a few years now and find the staff there to be excellent (Hertz at the International airport is OK but I find the City airport service best). I never take the extra insurance, and don't feel pressurised to do so, and am always reassured that very small marks on the car are not to be worried about. I am reminded about the excess of course - that is company policy - and the fuel policy, which is fine if you choose to fill it up before returning. When the hire is exactly 24 hours I have been given some extra minutes to allow for delays. Unlike some other companies no charge is made to take the car to the Republic. Price booked in advance are usually competitive, particularly if you look out for the discounts for "Wild Atlantic Way" or sometimes 20% at Belfast City. I don't use my Gold membership to book as booking at a "guest" usually gives a better price if you don't take the insurance.
