Dreadful meal. We have been here several times before and it has always been a real treat, however things have gone seriously downhill. Looking at other reviews, it seems I'm not alone in this finding.

The main issues were as follows:

- There was a rib of beef on the menu, for 3-5 people, at £60. Three of us decided to share this, as we were pretty hungry. What arrived was the worst cooked piece of meat it's ever been my misfortune to try to eat, and I've been to some pretty iffy barbecues. This is a cut of meat that is fatty, and therefore needs slow cooking to melt the fat and create a glorious, soft, delicious result. This is not what the chef had done. He had instead basically flash fried it as if it was a minute steak. The result was inedible, just lumps of gristle. When it was sent back, the manager came across to commiserate, in a slightly condescending manner, with the fact that not one of the three of us thought it was edible. He even said it wa a shame because the bottle of Rioja we had ordered 'would have gone so well with it'. I might agree, if the dish had been cooked anywhere near properly, although the wine itself was nothing special for £40. On reflection, I should have challenged him to eat a piece of it.

- One dish consisted of very undercooked broccoli in chicken stock. This was £9.

- Another was a single small octopus tentacle on a bed of what I imagine Tesco Value chicken & bacon sandwich spread to taste like. £12.

The waitress confessed to being new, but she knew nothing about the dishes or the wine list. Staff training is something that needs to happen before Friday night comes along. Her lack of menu knowledge was in no way helped by the fact that the menu is printed , using a printer whose toner needs replacing, on brown paper. In a dark, candlelit room, this is unreadable. Surely the fact that everyone, including the waiting staff, has the torches out on their phones to try to read the damned thing is a bit of a giveaway...

In short, whatever's changed, change it back. I used to be a regular, but it will be difficult to find a reason to return.

There's quite a few tapas restaurants in Bristol but Bell's Diner is right up there with the best. Delicious fresh dishes and some of the city's friendliest staff.

Have been long overdue a visit to this Bristol institution and was not disappointed in any way. From arrival, the staff were warm and welcoming, the menu was broad without being too long and the food was just bursting full of punchy, vibrant and well balanced flavours. 100% would re-visit, highly recommended

Bit of a mixed story here. The food and wine were really good, recommended. Service was okay, but certainly not warm or friendly, somewhere between business-like (as in we're busy) and cool

Thievery they are running here. We had a voucher directly bought from them and paid right away, it was given for my boyfriend's birthday. Because we haven't used it quickly enough for them, it apparently "expires". They are ridiculous to say the money (£80) is lost and we cannot use the voucher. Where on the earth you pay a restaurant in advance and they refuse to admit you? It is called Bell's Diner & Bar Rooms! We will spread the word not to ever dine with them. So many better places in Bristol with respectful service!
