It sort of has a huge school being built in the middle of it now. The park itself is presumably more or less gone in favour of the new school (which is shaping up to be a nice looking building). Park is still nice to jog around the perimeter of and still has enough green space separate from the golf course. But ultimately it's now school grounds.

A wee bit of hill and glen that for many years, could hardly be called a Park, sadly. Poor quality grass and litter strewn (I saw three discarded golf bags on a recent walk), the park is surrounded by existing housing, a railway depot and a main road. Many of the trees on the edges of the site are at the end of their natural life and are undergoing tree surgery to make them safe.
Now to have a new and much needed High School built on it due to the lack of large and central enough alternatives. The building of the school in this location is very popular with the majority of Portobello residents but building has been delayed by a small group of local residents who feel their outlook should not be spoilt for the sake of a new school (see review below - note unwillingness of reviewer to give a name). Most trees will be preserved under the "the school on the park" plan while some currently neglected areas will be reclaimed and made accessible to walkers. New trees have been planted in areas which will form a screen between the school and the much-loved adjacent golf course, which is claimed to offer Scotland's cheapest round of golf.
To balance the loss of the green space, Edinburgh council is to turn part of the old school site in a new park as well as improve green spaces and play areas to the south of the park, in Magdalene and Christians. Freeing up the old school site will allow the rebuilding of the St. John's primary avoiding disruptive decants and retaining both St. John and Portobello High School's "esprit de corps".

For over a century, Portobello Park had a quiet existence as part of a golf course, a wartime vegetable garden, and a football pitch. Now fame has found it at last. It's part of a local controversy over the siting of a new school, so reviews from locals will differ sharply. The park is not what some people expect - no paved paths with carefully clipped edges, no rose beds, no ornamental gardens, no swans - just a piece of the Lothians countryside with views of Arthur's Seat, the hill rising near the centre of Edinburgh, the Firth of Forth, and the Fife Coast. A woodland path runs along one side of the adjacent Golf Course and the Millenium Wood along the north contains many different types of young trees. The park is surrounded by tall trees possibly dating from 1900, when the first planting took place. On a sunny day, the early morning view of Arthur's Seat is especially spectacular. It's a wonderful place for those who can't get to a larger country park but are looking for a walk with views. The park has been neglected for some time - if you come in winter, bring your wellies, and if in summer, the grass may have become a meadow - it is hardly ever cut. In a few years' time the park may be the site of a three storey school building and car park for 100 cars - or it may be developed and improved and its views preserved.
