The hotel is relative to the price the worst choice you can do. The bad news are: All the other hotels in London are the same or just too expensive for a normal city trip.

Good value for price but has massive room for improvement given it's favourable location

First impression of the Hallam Hotel gave us insufficient information about several things and then weren't very hospitable to clear up situations.
The accommodation itself was extremely basic and in poor shape absolutely in dire need of a total renovation.
The cost and location of the hotel is excellent and a free ok breakfast was nice.
For us the not so fun excitement of being awoken by the fire alarm in the middle of the night and having strong smokesmell seeping into the room and running up from the bed and into the hallway was awful enough but at that moment seeing the staff seeing us and ignoring us and not telling us what we should do or even what is happening was quite extraordinary. No answers even the day after..
Oh did I forget to mention the soothing rocking motion of the tube underneath.. Or the chilly rooms?

I guess it could have been worse, I'd give it 1.5 stars if I could. So... Dirty, shabby rooms. Totally bored and inattentive staff. They weren't rude, but only because being rude takes effort. Stink of cigarettes through the night. Various parts of the room were broken and any repairs were done poorly. Both hot and cold taps produce warm water; this is not a good sign so we used bottled water to clean our teeth. Breakfast is apparently served in the laundry room, with huge bags of dirty linen stacked high in the corner. Breakfast choice is laughable; corn flakes or "barn flakes" (Bran flakes?) are the only cereals. The meagre menu promised "toast with butter, jam or marmalade". I asked for toast with marmalade..."we don't have marmalade" (there's an express supermarket two minutes down the road...I'm sure they could solve their marmalade shortage if they could be bothered). We had breakfast at the Riding House Cafe after that. On the plus side, it's quiet, warm and the location is handy.

Cheap hotels in London. Faucets malfunction. Electronic connector is loose. Carpeting huge dirty. Most of the room intrusively. Powder coffee in the room "better" than the breakfast. Taxis going past the hotel the whole time. My advice; while one!
