Just delicious. Lovely, non pretentious cosy and awesomely decorated dining area. Great attentive and knowledgeable staff. Oh and the food.....rich and delicious!!!! What a treat :)

Second time we've visited here. Came here for our anniversary meal. The steaks are to die for. Absolutely superb. Good range of beers too.

Had a few nights in York and read about everyone's incredible "steak experience" at the restaurant. Being a bit of a food snob (nope I don't eat my steak blue), I had to give it a try myself. We booked online with ease and managed to get a table. Once we arrived we were sat down by Joe our waiter who was excellent. The service in the restaurant was remarkable though may be a tad slow, but that was probably to get you to enjoy your drinks and talk to whoever you're with instead of staring at your phone. Our chateaubriand arrived and just like all the other reviews... I must say this is probably the best steak I have ever had. Dry aged and cooked to perfection it melted like butter in your mouth. The sides it came with were equally delicious, and the portion was generous. Even though we were full, we couldn't resist dessert, which was also decadent. I would wholeheartedly recommend The Whippet Inn to anyone in York.

Possibly the most disappointing evening I can ever recall in recent memory.
Recently returned to the UK, new to the city, had family who had literally just flown in to join us:
1. Almost involved in a fight trying to get into the place in the first instance on North Street.(unprovoked and the result of their delinquent behaviour - two guys throwing things at us!)
2. Food was over 1-1:30 hours late (table booked at 21:30 didn't actually 'eat' until close to midnight, given what was served to my party was cold to luke warm (aside from two dishes). It took two attempts to rectify, there isn't a lot you can mess up with a steak however it took some effort for the point to be comprehended and addressed
3. Lady sitting inside the front door with blood everywhere on the floor and coming from her head not sure that was the safest place to have been treating her (see the points below)
4. To top it all this 'guy' for want of a better description drags a girl (his girlfiend?) into the centre of the main sitting area next to our table screaming, grabbing her forcibly and attempted to head-butt, then spat on her - this was perhaps the single most disturbing moment....
5. Advised by the management to be careful leaving - and to allow them to go in front 'given what's outside' !!??
Sad having read all the previous reviews however I could not recommend this place nor simply shrug it off as 'one of these nights'.
It was simply atrocious on all levels, granted they are not responsible for individual behaviour however there was a lot more that could and should have been done that wasn't the staff were overwhelmed, distracted and generally fed up and out of their depth.

Went there and did not knew what to expect as it is not obvious when you past the front door that behind the bar will be the restaurant where you will have a proper steak experience. The service was excellent, the food was amazing and the prices were very decent. I totally recommend it for lunch as it was not crowded and do not hesitate to go for their beers for the full taste experience.
