In April of 2013 my oldest son had gone paintballing on a field trip organized by HVCC. The students were not warned/handed a memo or anything about the danger of ticks. My son said there were no noticeable signs at the venue (near Troy, not sure of the name of the place) either. This was Saturday, April 13th. By Mon April the 15th a tick bite was discovered, skin necrotic at the site of the bite. Took my son to his pediatrician that afternoon. Was prescribed ONE 200mg doxycycline pill, despite us voicing our concerns that one pill was insufficient to prevent Lyme. (Had I known about Dr. Stram at that point I would have taken my son to him immediately!)Within a few weeks, extreme lethargy ensued. Panic attacks by July of 2013. More cardiac issues such as racing heart, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (though we didn't know that at the time). He was STRUGGLING to get a full breath of air (Air Hunger). The pediatrician referred us to a cardiologist nearby. That cardiologist told us my son was "depressed" & needed to take "anti-anxiety meds". By October my son was BEDRIDDEN with very frightening cardiac episodes. My son kept preparing me for what he believed was his inevitable death because, "Mom, no one is helping me. Whatever it is that's wrong with me IS going to KILL me." He had to drop out of college in the end of the 2013 Fall semester. FINALLY, a friend of mine in the field of health care (the field I work), referred me to Dr. Stram. I am telling you, Dr. Stram SAVED MY SON'S LIFE. During the first appointment he quickly realized my son had a cardiac issue NOT attributed to depression or anxiety. He listened to my son, he did not dismiss his concerns. After walking out of the first appointment with Stram in November of 2014, my son said in the car ride home, "I appreciate everything you are trying to do to help me, but I"ve already accepted the fact that I am probably going to die from this." After a month of treatment with three different kinds of antibiotics, we had another follow-up appointment with Dr. Stram. My son was feeling much better in the sense he wasn't struggling as much for breath, the POTS had mostly resolved, the tachycardia wasn't quite as frequent or intense. He felt like there was hope. On the car ride home that day he said, "Maybe I will be able to go back to school." Yesterday was exactly 2 yrs since my boy was bitten. He is not out of the woods yet, he is not back at school, but Dr. Stram and his team have been very supportive, knowledgeable, and taken a very responsible approach to my son's health care. It's been a process. Cannot say enough good things about Jen, the NP. Love her! I honestly don't want to even *think* about where my son would be today were it not for Dr. Stram & Jen. He and his staff are angels.
