I stayed in Russell as a freshman during the 2014-2015 school year and I will say it was a very nice place to live in at the time. Sophomore and Junior year, I stayed in a dorm just a couple of blocks down the street from Russell. Mary Lyndon. And now final year, I live in at The Park at Lakeside Apartments, mainly bc Russell closed this year and they offered money to people to sell their dorm contracts and leave campus. I was planning on staying in Mary Lyndon during my final year but they were giving free money so I was like “what the hey”?

We might be Russellin' every day, but the only reason to Russell is because you were forcibly assigned it at orientation. Russell sucks, plain and simple. As do its closest residences next door, Brumby and Creswell- all equal levels of suck. It's ancient, for one. The rooms are tiny, everything in them is busted, and there's no privacy whatsoever between the bathrooms at the end of the hall and doors that don't lock or have giant gaps underneath them that people throw things under when they're not running up and down the hall screaming like the drunk idiots they are. But hey, that's freshman residences at the University of Georgia, right?

The worst part, I think, about my year there (2012) was the air conditioning. Or lack thereof. Russell and Brumby are on Boiler and Chiller systems, which means you have no control over the air coming out of the vents. From August to October and then again about May, they have the chillers running, which is supposed to put out cold air- however, they're so old and there are so many rooms that all it does is just keep the inside from reaching 90 degrees. Barely.
Then from October to April, they turn the heat on. Prepare to sweat. Every day. Every night. I ruined two sets of sheets and I-don't-know-how-many-free-tshirts just from sweating at night because it was so stiflingly hot. I had a thermometer in my room from day one- the room stayed an ambient 82 degrees year round. My roommate and I planted a fan in the window that opened half way to get some airflow, because there were only about two weeks out of the year that it wasn't more comfortable outside than in.

So go get your RuHa on.
