Freedmen's is a regular haunt for me and my friend anytime we're looking for a good spot for drinks and to catch up! The happy hour whiskey special and bbq sandwich are an incredible value, and I've always had great service and drinks! Note there is no A/C so dress appropriately based on the weather, but don't let that stop you. This is a fun, friendly and chill place to hang out (and one of the best options if you're trying to stick to campus area).

Great whiskey variety. I don't remember what I had, but it was very good. The food was very good, but I think the portions were very small for the price. Loved the outdoor patio space.

Sat outside, which was lovely. We had to ask another server to send out server over after he had made eye contact twice, but hadn't come to the table for about 5 minutes after being seated. We placed our orders, but they were out of every BBQ meat except turkey and brisket. 2 orders came out wrong, and I asked for 1 lb of fatty brisket, and was served some lean, dry brisket. Flavor was good, but it was not fatty. I also had ordered a whiskey flight, and when the food came out and it still wasn't there, I asked about it. This was after the rest of my party had finished their first round of beers. Also ordered the jalapeño cheese as an appetizer, which came to the table after the entrees did. It also tasted like hummus and was generally pretty gross. Of course I was charged for everything, so there wasn't even an awareness of how badly things were by staff. I'm not one to complain, so I didn't ask, I just let it reflect in the gratuity. All in all, don't bother here. Service is lousy and the food isn't worth the effort.

Great atmosphere in a place with saloon like interior in a building with history. Food was tasty, while limited in items on the menu. Some do sell out, too. Focus is BBQ, and it helps if you can do hot/spicy. Friendly and attentive staff.

Pit masters favorite sandwich was glorious. There's this massive pork belly crazy going on currently, I personally think it's overrated, but Freedmen's made me eat my own words. The pickled red onions and deviled eggs salad really brought the sandwich together. Sandwich is a 5/5, the sides were only meh to me. Cole slaw and potatoes salad were good, you cons tell they put some good effort into them and they match Freedmen's brand. But I thought they were a bit too raw? Need to keep it simple when it comes to the sides for me when it comes to barbecue. Probably should be a 4.5/5. Either way, definitely going back.
