Great traditional chowder in Monterrey.
Pros: Excellent clam chowder, without all the cheap potato filler. Bowl for ~7$ was fantastic! Calamari was just the way it should be... light flour based battering not breadcrumbs and cooked just RIGHT. I was tempted to make the sourdough bread that accompanied the chowder a meal in itself. Warm, fresh with a generous portion of butter. Homey ambiance, nothing fancy but everything just right. Paper table covers and a bowl of crayons kept the kids busy as well.
Cons?: Would have given 5 stars except that service-wise the day I went (Sunday afternoon) they made folks (8-10 people) wait outside the restaurant while they had an entire back room open.
Gluten-free option was a (big) burger with a generous portion of fries. I got the dinner-version but the kid menu one was generous as well.
I wish someone would try some GF batters so my kid could enjoy the evils of fried seafood as well.

Get the fish special. I had the rockfish. Mother in law had the local sole. Both were great. The jalapeño cilantro sauce is a treat (not too spicy at all). The chowder is delicious. It’s a short walk from the aquarium, which made a perfect midday break.

The seafood Newbury was simply delicious beyond expectations. Veggies were fresh and deliciously prepared. Pasta side had a hint of smoked italian bacon. Overall a delicious meal

I have eaten here for almost 20 years. There is nothing on the menu I wouldn't recommend. Service is always great, food is great. Certainly the best clam chowder. I won't eat chowder anywhere else.
Oh and his french fries are always hot and crunchy on the outside and soft and flavorful on the inside.

Great food and not too pricey. The service was also very exceptional and our waiter, Mark, was super nice. Decided to stop by here after a long day at Monterey Bay Aquarium and went in super hungry. The place was pretty empty, and I wasn't too surprised considering it was around 3pm. Ended up ordering Steamed Clams, Oysters on Half Shell, and two orders of the New England Clam Chowder Bread Bowls with the Garlic Cheese Lid which ended up being way too much for the both of us and ended up finishing everything except the bread bowl. I would highly recommend trying the New England Clam Chowder Bread Bowl with the Garlic Cheese Lid, as it is one of the best I've ever had. All in all, it's a very cozy place and the service makes this place a must try!
