Outstanding. They showcase their She Crab soup for good reason. I had blackened flounder, very nicely done. Some one else in party had prime rib that could feed family of 4 and perfectly executed. Sherry had crab cakes that made her happy. Cool place.

The service is impeccable. Staff is friendly and attentive. The food is freshly made and tasty. The must have if you visit is the She-Crab Soup. We had the bison ribs and grilled pork chops; they both melted in our mouths. This local restaurant is a must for any visitors in Hampton Roads for history and food.

Our server was attentive and honest with recommendations -- just the right amount of fun and professionalism and knew the specials well. Food wait time was pretty good, considering the large number of tables she had to service. You get tasty bread rolls and butter and the atmosphere inside this historic church is very warm and cozy.
The best part was the food-- award winning she crab soup, and well prepared everything. We ordered the blackened Seafood Fantasia, which was absolutely delicious. Every single piece of fish was awesome, especially the tilapia, which had a melt in your mouth quality that really brought it home. Portions were fair and you leave satisfied. Highly recommend the atmosphere and food. They have a brunch, lunch and dinner menu.

Excellent dinner place!
Very cool restaurant setting.
I had a $28 October deal with a three course dinner.
Had the She Crab Soup which was superb!
A flat iron steak was fabulous with a pumpkin cappuccino sauce.
And for dessert I had the apricot bread pudding and it was as delicious as you would imagine!! A must try (along with the soup!)
Also try the Seafood Fantasia- it’s also amazing!
Would come back to Norfolk just to eat at this restaurant again!

3 Words,
Simple. Fresh. Delicious.
The great Gordon Ramsey says that for any restaurant to be successful, it must fulfill three basic requirements; the food must be fresh, the Front of House must be friendly and 'service-driven', and the scenery must match the food being brought.
Freemason Abbey shatters and I'll even say sets a precedent for these three requisites.
Upon walking in, you're met with an old-time, 'take your coat off and stay awhile' vibe, from the subtle, but not obnoxious low-lighting, to the soft record player music playing away.
I've dined both as a 'sit-down, full service' and a 'just grabbing a bite to eat after class' guest, and both times I was met with EXCEPTIONAL service from both the serving staff and the kitchen staff. Just today I sat down at the bar and was greeted by the incredibly friendly bartender, Leslie. I ordered their $9 lunch special, which is a choice of one of their half sandwiches and a choice of a half salad, side, etc. I got the half "Abbey Club" and a half "Spinach Salad". The sandwich was piled high with turkey, ham, FRESH cooked, crispy bacon, and typical sandwich fixins like tomato, lettuce, and a fresh made spicy mayo. Absolutely delicious. Perfect balance of flavors, not too salty, not TOO much of any one thing. The salad met the sandwich with equal excellence, a combination of simple, fresh ingredients (spinach, grapes, grape tomatoes, almonds, red onion, and a house made balsamic vinaigrette) perfect balance of sweet, sour, and amazing.
Leslie was incredibly friendly and conversational, making sure that I felt like a valued guest even though I was only sitting at the bar and was dressed like a ragamuffin.
Freemason Abbey is where fine-dining meets public accessibility. For $9, i felt like I ate like a king.
Would highly recommend whether you need a quick lunch bite, or you're celebrating a big event.
5/5 and am going to be a returning customer for life.
