One of my favorite places to hike. The water is so beautiful. It's a narrow trail at some spots, so you have to be careful. It's is well worth it.

A really charming trail up a redwood rimmed creek, but this is real hiking, not just a stroll. It is steep, much of the trail itself is neglected and not maintained which is more evident since the last two big storms we had in January 2017, there's a lot of erosion and very narrow muddy portions. There is also a downed redwood blocking the path a few hundred yards (or so?) from Mountain Drive (down around New Years) that is challenging to climb over. Further up you need to be prepared to do some rock scrambling through the creek to continue to summit.

This is one of the more wild parks in the East Bay. Trails are narrow and often plunge steeply down into the creek on one side. There are no handrails.
After a harrowing experience with three small children on a muddy path one day, I didn't go back for years. I'm glad I did. It is quiet enough to hear the sound of water. It is shady with the perfect amount of light filtering through the towering branches of old redwoods.
