Very primitive accommodations in the Garden Cottage. Like camping with indoor plumbing. No soap products, no blankets and limited dishes, towels etc. Dingy and dark. Definitely would not recommend. The only saving grace is the location.

We rented a unit for the month of May. The duplex was good for our purposes, a bit overpriced in terms of the quality of the apartment. It's definitely older, the patio out back has a railing and wood that is splitting and chipping and the bathtub was cracked and rusted to the point that it felt like you might fall through when you stand in it. However, the location is great, we never heard our neighbors and everyone is friendly. This management company definitely reaps the benefits of being one of the only short term property management companies in the area, as there are not many alternatives. The manager was super responsive during our stay when we had an issue with the wifi.
Unfortunately, it's been almost a month and no deposit refund. I've emailed and followed up with no response. It is incredibly poor business practice to expect tenants to follow deposit requirements to reserve and rent the space and not return the courtesy when the deposit is due back. I even inquired if something was amiss with the apartment (we followed check out procedure to a T) and no response. Their contract clearly states the refund will be returned within 14 days. I'm disappointed and hope to hear from management promptly or I will be filing a small claims case. My husband and I have owned and run our small business for years so it's so disappointing to try and support another local, small business and have this experience. I recommend trying air bnb, I wish we had, we could have had a much nicer space for about the same price and a corporate policy in place to protect us from situations like this.

This literally was the worst experience I've ever had. We prepaid for a 30 day vacation rental, called Hemingway Flat, that supposedly had "radiant floor heating" & was "kid-friendly". We got there the first night and the place was not clean!!!! & it smelled slightly of cat pee, we texted and asked how to turn in the radiant heating to find out that it was currently broken but getting "fixed". There where three crappy space heaters that abandoned by the back door for our use (2 of the 3 barely worked, loud & old ) a.) not efficient to heat up the space b.) completely unsafe for small children. Michael the manager told me Chris Landis the property owner was fixing it. Well, a day and half passes, no progress, no communication & no heat. Not to mention there was condensation on all the windows and we moved a picture in the front corner bedroom to discover black mold covering the wall!!!!! Gross! Third night in, I called Chris(owner) after dealing with repeatedly being ignored by Mike(manager) who apparently had no means to discuss or communicate with us about dealing with this at all in a timely fashion.Day four, at this point I'm pretty pissed, we spent two grand to stay three nights in an uninhabitable unit with no remedy, no offer to refund and zero courtesy, zero professionalism and little to no communication. Well end of day four, while in the process of trying to fix it apparently that means the hot water is also on hiatus. I've contacted the Att. General among other entities, I've politely asked for a refund so that we can make other accommodations, as we have a right to basic needs (heat, clean & safe lodging) especially with a two year old. Warning! We found out because either Chris didn't remember his lies or just couldn't help but to admire that the heat hasn't been working in the unit for the past 8 months!!!!! He knowingly rented my family an unheated unit! Had I known in advance this was the case I would have cancelled my check and stayed elsewhere!!!! That's my decision to make and legally they and any other lodging is liable to be upfront and disclose such malfuctions. Do not give them your business, there are better options, go to AirBnB, they have a standard & make sure your satisfied & are protected as the consumer. Tenants have rights, to have basic needs met, including vacation rentals which falls into the hotel statutes. A hotel will change your room or make another accommodation, these people rob you and think it's acceptable. Historic Hawthorne Rentals is a scam!!!! Beware!

It is unfortunate to have to be writing this, but after the substandard experience we have had with Historic Hawthorne Rentals it seems like a necessity. The Hemingway property was not what we had hoped it would be. The cleanliness of the flat was questionable at best. There was mildew on the shower curtains and black mildew caked under and around the bath tub faucets. The first night we were there I gave my 4 year old daughter a bath and the tub had to be scrubbed clean before we could use it. There is no reason for this in a vacation rental that supposedly employs and charges it's tenants for a professional house cleaner. There were cobwebs in the corners of nearly all of the rooms and a layer of dust on everything in the flat. The overall appearance of the place was not clean. The vacuum that is provided barely worked and during our entire stay we were never able to get the rugs truly clean since the vacuum left dirt behind. Everything in the rental seemed to have come from thrift stores and barely worked if at all. The coffee pot, toaster, and vacuum were all examples of this. In addition to the unclean appearance of the unit, the finish of the bath tub was flaking off as well as the finish on the floors. We were also told the flat was 1000+ square feet and it was barely 700. The condition of the exterior of the house and the yard were nothing short of ridiculous. I had expressed my concern after we had seen the house a month before our stay and had been assured that Chris was a meticulous owner and that he was doing some remodeling work to the exterior of the house. Had we seen pictures of what the house looked like prior to renting it we would have gone with a different property. Chris was not meticulous in the upkeep of the yard in the least and as I had feared this was reflected in the vacation rental upkeep as well. During our stay the water heater went out. We talked to Chris when it happened and he said he would have it fixed by early that evening, so we went out for the day and when we came home around 6 pm he told us he would have it fixed by 9 or 10 that night and that he would need to come in to our unit and get any air that was in our pipes out when he turned it back on. We decided we would go to a hotel that evening seeing how we didn't have any hot water or heat and let him work on it. When we came home the next day in the afternoon he was riding his bike around in the street drinking a beer and informed us that he had "run out of steam" the night before after we had left and that he was hoping to have it fixed by that evening. There was no regard for the trouble or inconvenience this had caused us and there was certainly no urgency in resolving the problem in the time frame he had given. Then on the 4th of April the heat stopped working in our unit. We still had hot water but no heat, it was unfortunate timing as we had just returned home from having our baby that night but Chris came down and gave us a couple of space heaters to use. It was a Friday night and he told us he wouldn't be able to do anything about it during the weekend. More than a week later when we hadn't heard anything we asked him if it was getting fixed. I'm not clear what the issue was but it was not getting fixed. The remainder of our stay was without working heat. The space heaters were difficult to use since we have a young child and they would get extremely hot to the touch and they were very loud. The lack of regard from Chris in communicating with us and handling the problems that arose during our stay were matched by his lack of concern and regard for the noise level of the property. Given what the rates are to rent this unit we are extremely unsatisfied with our stay. Overall, the unit was unclean and shabby and in poor maintenance. It is literally the ugliest property in the neighborhood. It also took them almost a month to return our security deposit.
