I know someone who lost a husband and had a life insurance policy they treated her awful and customer service was terrible. Put more stress on a grieving widow. They never pay out on time the are not a good business to deal with at all.

I have decided today to just forgo the whole process involving The Standard and continue rehabbing until, I am full strength. I may not receive weekly benefits but it really takes a load off my back not dealing with them. I believe this has been the worst experience ever, when it comes to dealing with paperwork and customer service.

Now, I went out on February 10th with inflammation in my lower in my lower back. I was given time off to rest because this has been a reoccurring issue because of the type of work I do at OHSU (Oregon Health Science University). I understand that there is a waiting week when you are on STD but it seems as though I have to wait forever because of the communication in the background. I received my payments intermittently, not once can I recall that I received weekly benefits. I thought I paid for a service that would give me weekly pay at 65% of my work income. Well, I guess in this case I should just be satisfied with receiving it every 2 weeks and sometimes every 3 weeks.

I had foot surgery on March 15th, which caused more stress with this situation. I was told that I would have to wait another week because they are 2 separate claims. When I called previously before I had the foot surgery I was told that the claim would be merged into one so I would not have any lag time. Well, that was not the case! I had to wait 3 weeks before I actually received a benefit check.

I find it quite puzzling that I have payments deducted out of my paycheck for a service that does not meet the expectations that are stated during open enrollment. What I can say is that my claims coordinator has been a bright spot but that still isn’t saying much about this situation. I totally understand there are guidelines, forms and other criteria that goes into determining a person’s short term disability but the process is really, really bad. I would not recommend The Standard to none of colleagues or anybody that I know. Lesson learned is plan better for STD and never rely on anybody to make on-time payments to you. I was too involved in process that needs revamped, when I should have been focusing on rehabbing.
