Like one of the other reviewers here, I am only giving 3 stars because the drivers were great. The City Tours office personnel (one girl in particular) was quite uninterested altogether when booking the tours. At 08.30 we were sold a city sightseeing tour, and on wanting to pay cash, she told us they had no change. Ok, that was acceptable at that time of the morning, and we managed to rake up the exact amount. But on booking the next day's tour to Monterey/Carmel...at 5pm the same day, they STILL had no change!!??? They obviously preferred dealing with credit cards.
Part of the city tour was a guided walk through Haight-Ashbury, so we were put off the bus at 2.20pm and the guide said that another guide would meet us for the walk at 2.30pm.....Well..no one came to lead us on that walk so we caught the next bus which arrived 15 minutes later. We were so glad to get on it as we had been waiting at the drug dealers hangout McDonalds, which we had only just been told is going to be demolished for not having been able to get a grip on the drug problem encompassing that branch!! The next tour bus guide told us that our walking tour should have been 3.30 and not 2.30 as we had been told!! He apologised on behalf of Gray Line. The same disinterested girl in the Jefferson/Leavenworth branch who never had any change, told us that our nearest pick up point for the Monterey/Carmel day trip was to be THERE at the office at 07.10 next morning. We took a cab there as advised and had a great tour with DANNY the guide/driver. Brilliant guy. He dropped everyone off at their hotel at the end of the long day, but we told him our pick up point was fishermans Wharf as the girl said they couldn't pick us up any nearer than that.
Well Danny got very angry at that and told us of COURSE they should have picked us up at our hotel that morning!! That's what they do!!!
So we were not very impressed with the Gray Line admin!!
The hop on hop off city tour does take in a lot though, it was a good tour

My wife and I took the tour, never having been in the city. Duffy was a super tour guide and made the city come alive with his knowledge and wit. Would definitely recommend to others.

Alcatraz Tour plus Muir Woods, Giant Redwoods and Sausalito Day Trip
We received the worst customer service from Grey Line. I received two emails the night before our booking. One stated we were to meet at their main office at 8:30 am the second saying there was a closer location we could meet at closer to our hotel at the same time. Neither email gave us a contact or phone number to call. We arrived at the second email location at 8;30 am and the chic behind the counter had no info on us or any idea that we were coming. She was also extremely rude. She told us that our tour would not start until 10 am and to come back at 9 am to get our tickets. She said we could walk to the pier for the boat to Alcatraz. I was under the impression that we would be shuttled from location to location?? I mean for $417 they could have dropped us off, right? We had to walk a mile there and then back another mile on top of a long day of exploring 3 sites (I walked over 11 miles that day). She never told us what time to be back for the next part of our tour. When we got back the shuttle had already left for Muir Woods and we had to wait another hour. We ended up missing Sausalito altogether. The shuttle driver was very rude to many people on our bus and drove like a crazy person. We are requesting at least a partial refund on the $417 we spent on this package.

The ONLY reason they are getting 3 stars is because their drivers were great! They as a company are AWFUL AND COMPLETELY UNORGANIZED!!!!!!!!!! We were furious after being delayed by more than 30 minutes and missing most of our time in Sausalito. Apparently our trip was delayed while we waited on people stuck in traffic coming from the airport. That is absurd! There was no communication and little remorse from the office. Never again.

My friend and I booked a Muir Woods/Sausalito tour through Viator, which then connected us to Gray Line. A bus picked us up in front of our hotel at 8 am, and made various other stops along the route to pick up other passengers. This isn't the actual tour bus, but it just shuttles everyone to their office by Fisherman's Wharf, and then everybody goes on their respective tours.
For the Muir Woods one, they couldn't take a bus because of the windy roads leading up to the park. As a workaround, they have to take a large van. However, this van was overbooked by about two people so everyone in the back had to squish together. Not ideal, even though the park is only about a half an hour away. They need to figure out logistics and their people to van ratio.
Aside from that situation, it was a nice half day tour. You get about an hour at Muir Woods, and then it's a short trip to Sausalito. You have an hour to explore the town before you take the half hour ride back to Fisherman's Wharf (or you can also jump ship and opt to shell out a little extra to take the Sausalito ferry back to SF). It is a pretty rushed tour so if you want more time to explore, this one probably isn't for you. But if your goal is to see as much of the Bay area as you can in a short period of time, then Gray Line is a good choice.
