I was a mother of five children from Mississippi, that just had lost my mother I was living with. The lady that let us rent her basement had her own family. My and her children would have altercations, that caused a problem in the home. One day while sitting at the bus stop I met a lady, can't recall her name. She asked why are you crying, and upset? At the moment I wasn't aware I was crying, but I begin to share my situation with her. She gave N.L.E.C address and told me to talk to Rod, which ran the shelter in Decatur Ill.
The person I spoke with said he would be down in a couple days, and I could call back then. I called a few data later and had the pleasure of speaking with a man of God. He said that my family and I could meet him at NLEC and he had room for my family and I in Decatur. I let him know that I was nervous about leaving out lead the city, and he assured me all would be well. So I prayed and talked with the family about me, and we ended up in Decatur. We went to a whole house that was full of peace, holy spirit and love. We were tired when we made it there while we unpacked and rest Rod made dinner. He invited us over in that was my first time seeing Jesus active in a human body. I had a alcohol, nicotine, and drug problems they were unaware of when I went there. Oh but God....
I could go on forever about my story at NLEC but I would just stop here. I love Larry and the late Ms.Penny, and Rod!
I have nothing to say but I recognized who Jesus was through these peoples.

Larry Rice has done as Jesus did...walk among the poor to spread the word of God. May prayers are with Larry Rice and the homeless. Will you get your hands dirty for the Glory of God? Amen

When I was there some guy that worked there touched a 14 year old girl, when people found out what happened he got kicked out but when the conversation of what he did dimmed down the guy was let back into Larry rice.if u have to stay there for more then 15 days u have to work, when u work it's at least 30hrs a week.U don't have time to get a real job that actually pays u,and when u work there they don't pay u.everyone that's there seems so miserable and angry at who knows but it's taken out on everyone around the angry people.mostly the people that work there that r there for the 2yr program make it hard on everyone's stay. When money gets donated to new life NOTHING really gets done.people say Larry rice keeps all the money..I believe it honestly.Bed bugs, mold, Bologna and cheese sandwiches are the problem mostly. There's supposably a kitchen with real food on one of the floors but the only thing people get there are Bologna sandwiches. If the place gets cleaned up like actually cleaned up top to bottom and there's real trained staff there I think it'd make it somewhat easier on the people that r there and end up going there in the future. It seems like Larry rice just wants to make himself look good. If u don't believe me go there for yourself. When Larry rice has high position people there to talk to him and check the place out.The lobby will be cleaned spotless. its crazy how people get fooled because when u go to the 2nd,3rd 4th floor ull be mind blown about the filth and you'll see how difference of a sanitary atmosphere each floor is from the lobby. If an inspector goes there they shouldn't call before they go ,they should just show up cause if u call before u go they'll make the place seem spotless. When u sleep there throw out ur belongings if u take ur clothes or belongings with u after u leave Larry rice and u don't wash or disinfect ur items the mold and bed bugs will stay with u where ever u go. I threw out all my belongings after I left Larry rice.

I came to volunteer and what a great experience. How can you not support the programs that provide vital assistance to the less fortunate. Homeless people are among the most vulnerable people in the homeless population. They tend to have high rates of behavioral health problems, severe mental illness and substance abuse disorders, conditions that may be exacerbated by physical illness, injury or trauma.- I live 4 miles from downtown, there is a great need for this service in our downtown area.
I support New Life and will continue to volunteer and drop off donations as long as I can.
