Language Botswana, officially the Republic of Botswana (Tswana: Lefatshe la Botswana), is a country located in Southern Africa. The citizens are referred to as "Batswana" (singular: Motswana). Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name after becoming independent within the Commonwealth on 30 September 1966. It has held free and fair democratic elections since independence.

The country offers excellent game viewing and birding both in the Delta and in the Chobe Game Reserve--home to one of the largest herds of free-ranging elephants in the world. Botswana's Central Kalahari Game Reserve also offers good game viewing and some of the most remote and unspoiled wilderness in southern Africa.

The country has a population of around 2. 4 million people and the capital and largest city is Gaborone. The official languages are English and Setswana. The currency is the Botswana pula.

Botswana has a semi-arid climate with hot summers and warm winters. The country is known for its wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, and cheetahs, and has a number of national parks and game reserves where visitors can view these animals in their natural habitats. The Okavango Delta, located in the northwest of the country, is a popular destination for safari tourism.
