This park named after James Oatley, 1770-1839 born in Staffordshire, England and sentenced to death in 1814 for stealing tow featherbed mattresses and other goods. The sentence was commuted to transportation to Australia for the term of his natural life. When James Oatley arrived aboard HMS Marquis of Wellington in 1815, hi gave his occupation as a clock and watchmaker and was soon appointed keeper of the Town Clocks. He was allowed to set his own business and his shop was in George Street
Salt Pan Creek; Prior to 1926, Salt Pan Creek was the site of an Aboriginal squatters camp consisting of refugee families of the dispossessed and those seeking to escape the brutal policies of the Aboriginal Protection Board. From 1926 to 1935, it became a focal point of Aboriginal resistance in New South Wales. Salt Pan Creek was named after a popular watering place on the Kentish coast in England.
