Some facinating geology here. The once semi-molten rock was subjected to compression from the top, squeezing the rock into layers like rolling a pie crust. Later when the rock was cooler, compression from the sides caused this beautiful deformation of folding.. The rock is a metaphoric gneiss (pronounced "nice") It is about 1.8 billion years old, about 1/3 of the age of the planet earth.
