Sheep farming is big business on Amherst Island. Sheep out number people.
Century old split cedar rail fences, and the Mayor of Amherst Island, out standing in his field.
Where else would you find a large horse stable behind a rural church except historic Amherst Island? This was an important feature 100 years ago. I have photographed over 170 old churches to date, and only 3 still have stables standing. See Franktown north of Smith Falls on CR # 15, and 10 km west of Renfrew on CR # 5.
Old farm implements are everywhere on historic Amherst Island. They give a quaint feeling to the whole island. Enjoy them on your visit,
It's not Macchu Picchu, but it is home on Amherst Island. Horses, thousands of sheep, beef cattle, donkeys and this lama are an integral part of the charm of the island. Deer are abundant, and I have seen many species of owls, water fowl, hawks, eagles, a Fisher (weisel) and coyotes.
